Flippin’ the switch

What can one man do with 3 days of good weather, over 700 light clips, 5 extension cords and a whole lot of patience?

Ta-da!

Saying my husband likes Christmas is like saying Santa enjoys the occasional cookie. S loves every part of the holiday season, including putting up outdoor lighting.  He clambered around for days, outlining the rooftop’s perimeter and the front door…

and the garage doors…

and the big wreath on the front of the house.

Note the giant ornaments dangling from the overhang.

The pièce de résistance is the new snowman head that my folks got him as an early Christmas present this year.

It fits over the street light like its cousin, the jack-o-lantern one, and S didn’t waste any time putting it up after Thanksgiving. I think he needs a bow tie, so I may be tossing the decorations to find some red outdoor ribbon later today.

We did wait until after Thanksgiving to light all these decorations up because we do have some boundaries. I feel like we are speeding through the Halloween-through-New-Year’s holiday lineup, so I try to keep a little separation between them.

But now that it’s after turkey day, we are full steam ahead to the December holidays. We’ve flipped the switch on the lights and the season, and the hype is starting to burble up in our house. So much anticipation of all the fun coming in the next month — Christmas TV specials, winter orchestra, band, and choir concerts, Christmas cookies, holiday parties — I could go on and on, and that’s all before the Big Day itself.

I’m going to try to slow down, get a little perspective and enjoy the whimsy of the season. And I’m not going to think about how we’re getting all those lights down in January.

Wow! How my kids would love this! Nice job!

I can’t tell what I loved more – the effort of your ambitious husband, or your snappy post. Very funny. Very wonderful. I really related to the slowing down part – isn’t that a good idea!

    • I’m giving him his propers. Really — he’s like a man possessed with those lights.

And I really am going to slow down and appreciate the season this year. Really. Well, I am definitely going to try. It’s always so much easier on paper, though, than in the midst of the cookie-baking-concert-attending-party-preparing-tree-decorating melee.

  5. Wow, what an amazing job your husband did!! A few people put up their lights in our neighborhood, and it makes everything feel so festive. My 2 year old daughter loves it! I’m sure your neighbors feel the same 🙂

    • My husband saw your comment and said, “See? I’m making the neighborhood festive. I need more lights.” He’s pretty proud of the effect.

I like driving through the different subdivisions and seeing all the lights too. It definitely gives it that holiday feeling!

      • LOL, he definitely deserves a lot of credit!! And if that means more lights, then so be it 🙂

We are going on a trolley ride near the end of December with my kids to see the Honolulu City Lights downtown…we are so excited!!

S did a great job. Do you still hang the Star Trek ornaments? We always go driving to see the lights, we make the trek your way to see them all in person.

  7. OK! Is your husband for hire? Your Christmas light display is wonderful! Thank you so much for sharing. Love it! ~Thea

    • Thanks, Thea! He really likes doing all the lights — but only on warmer days. He’s not the biggest fan of installing them in “brisk” weather — and truthfully, neither am I. If I had to put the outdoor lights up, we’d probably have a sad, tiny, drooping wreath on the front door. 🙂

  8. Wowzer!!! Looks beautiful!! I love that Mr. Jack o’ Lantern has a snowman cousin!!! Hilarious!!

    • That snowman head made his holiday season, that’s for sure. We usually have a yard full of inflatable Disney characters, but I’m not sure if we’re doing that this year or not. That’s still being negotiated. 🙂
